FAQ on 4-color/process black vs. 1-color/100K black
  • What is 4-color, or "Process" black? A version of the color black that is created by combining Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and blacK inks.
  • Why is 4-color/Process black bad? Because this version of the color black contains 4 colors, it requires 4 press plates to print the images that have this color. Imagine if you were using a stamp pad and trying to lay the same stamp image on top of itself 4 times, each time in a different color. It is practically impossible to keep the printing plates lined up or "in registration" tight enough to produce clean, sharp images and legible text.
  • How do I avoid using 4-color/process black? When selecting a color in your imaging software, use the color palette instead of the swatches. In the color palette you can see the value of C, M, Y, and K that was used to create the color you want. For true 1-color/100K black, you will need to make sure the values for C, M, and Y are all at 0%. The value for K should be 100%. If you want to use grey, keep C, M, and Y at 0% and decrease the K percentage until you get the desired shade of grey.

Electronic File Submissions
  • Submission of Text Only Files:
The Record Newspaper uses Macintosh computers for graphic work and page layout, but we can import a variety of Microsoft Word files from PCs. We can open most versions of Microsoft Office, but not Publisher files (.pub). Try saving the text in a couple of different formats (.doc, .txt, etc.). Most text formats are small and can be burned on a CD-ROM or e-mailed as an attachment.
  • Submission of Graphics and Text Files:
    • Black & White, & Grayscale ads
Can be saved as a PDF, TIFF (or tif), or EPS file. Fonts need to be embedded in the file &/or included in a folder with fonts. DON’T SAVE THE FILE AS A JPEG UNLESS IT IS A PICTURE ONLY! Text and line drawings appear bitmapped or jagged when we print them in JPEG format. Save the file on a CD &/or attach to an e-mail.
    • Spot Color & 4-Color Ads
Can be saved as a PDF, TIFF (or tif), or EPS file. Fonts need to be embedded in the file &/or included in a folder with fonts. Composite CMYK PDFs generally separate into colors at the printer with no problems. TIFF and EPS files also do well. SAVE 4-COLOR FILES as CMYK files, not RGB (RGB is for viewing colors on a screen). Be sure to include page information & registration marks on composite color & separated files you are sending. Save the file on a CD &/or attach to an e-mail.
